In 1988, a paper was published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, titled: Oral conception. Impregnation via the proximal gastrointestinal tract in a patient with an aplastic distal vagina. Case report. This paper documented the case of a 15 year old girl in the small African country of Lesotho who was born without a vagina (condition known as Mullerian agenesis) and who gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Doctors were puzzled; even the girl had no idea how it happened.
After a review of hospital records, the staff staff realized the young girl was in the hospital 278 days earlier with a knife wound to her stomach. Wanna guess how long the average pregnancy lasts? 280 days! After interviews, they gathered that “Just before she was stabbed in the abdomen she had practiced fellatio with her new boyfriend and was caught in the act by her former lover. The fight with knives ensued.”
To quote Dr. Sherman J. Silber, director of the infertility center of Saint Louis at St. Luke’s Hospital in Missouri, this story “could send a message to ordinary couples planning pregnancy.”
Um. What exactly would that message be? As long as you have oral sex and then stab yourself the chances that sperm can swim around in your abdomen for a few days and make it to your egg is surprisingly pretty good? That’s. Great…??
But apparently, that is exactly what happened. It didn’t surprise many doctors because sperm is known to be very hardy. And even though the majority die off quickly, there’s so many of them to begin with that means you could have a good 50 million who can still go the distance. In fact, in the early days (1980s) of fertility treatments, doctors injected sperm in the lower abdomen hoping for the coincidental encounter with an egg (procedure known as direct intraperitoneal insemination).
Now some doctors argue that the girl never would have made it to 15 without medical symptoms (ie, since she had no vagina, menstrual blood would have accumulated in the abdomen and caused serious issues). But the girl said she had never had problems, hence may not have ever started her period. So the next time you feel down about your infertility, just consider all your options, ok? There is always fellatio, volatile men and a knife to help you out.
